Introduction. 

Ghana, a nation with a burgeoning economy, faces the persistent issue of unemployment. Over the years, data has revealed the ebb and flow of joblessness among different age groups. In 2020, the unemployed population in Ghana aged 25 years or older was estimated to be around 376,000, while the population between 15-24 years without any form of employment was slightly lower, at approximately 245,000. This data presents an opportunity to delve into the trends of unemployment, their impact, and the stories of individuals affected by these statistics.

Research

A comprehensive research study has been conducted to explore the trends and implications of unemployment in Ghana from 2010 to 2022. The primary objective was to understand the fluctuations in unemployment rates and how they vary across different age groups.

Our investigation centered on the Greater Accra Region, one of Ghana's most urbanized areas, where the dynamics of unemployment are notably different. Here, we explored how the issue affects different age groups and the distinct challenges faced by young people and adults in finding work.


Applying Numbers

The Greater Accra Region, which serves as the economic hub of Ghana, has seen substantial fluctuations in unemployment rates. The data shows that unemployment has been most pronounced among those aged 15-24, with numbers varying over the years. On the other hand, individuals aged 25 and above have experienced their own set of challenges, with their unemployment rates fluctuating but generally remaining high.


Using an Anecdote

During our investigation in the Greater Accra Region, we met Samuel, a recent university graduate who has been seeking employment for the past two years. Samuel shared his experience, stating, "I completed my degree with high hopes, but the job market has been tough. I've applied to countless places, but opportunities are scarce, especially for someone fresh out of school."

In conclusion, the issue of unemployment in Ghana has exhibited fluctuations and complexities over the years. The research findings, the substantial numbers, and Samuel's personal account emphasize the need to address this issue and develop strategies to create more employment opportunities, especially for the country's young population. Unemployment remains a significant challenge that Ghana must confront to ensure a brighter future for its citizens.
